High School Football Championships

Seahawks Lose Heartbreaker to the Sun Devils

The AA championship game was match-up between the #1-ranked Seahawks and the #2-ranked Sun Devils and the game and it lived up to all the pre-game hype and was the most hotly contested game of the day with the Sun Devils taking the Championship by a score of 18-16.

It was only right that the game should come down to the last few seconds...and what a last few seconds! Trailing by two points with under a minute remaining Seahawks quarterback Cody Hawkins showed why he was selected the AA Player of the Year as he engineered what was maybe his best drive of the season utilizing all of his weapons to get the Seahawks down to the 25-yard line when he threw a beautiful strike to wide receiver Cina Moalleff who appeared to cross the goal line only to be overruled by a very dubious call by an official who was not in good  position. The Seahawks had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt which just went wide thus preserving the win for the Sun Devils who were full value for the victory.

Our congratulations to coach Ray Moon and the Sun Devils who won their first ever AA Football Championship.

Congratulations to Kris Pechet and the Seahawks on an outstanding season.

Cody Hawkins, in addition to being named AA Player of the Year was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Game.

Terry Fox Cap Perfect Season

The Ravens lived up to all their pre-game billing as one of the most dominant teams in the history of BC High School football by taking the AAA Championship with a convincing 57 - 16 victory.

Joe Patko showed why he was named the AAA Player of the Year as he rushed 26 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns and recorded numerous crunching tackles from his middle linebacker spot.

The W.J. Mouat Hawks were simply out-manned but never gave up during the game and got a solid performance from middle linebacker Tyler Declare (AAA All Star).

Congratulations to co-coaches Tom Kudaba and Martin McDonnell and all the Ravens on an outstanding season.

Congratulations to Joe Patko who was named the Most Valuable Player of the game.

Other Scores:

AAA Jr Varsity: W.J. Mouat 21 - St Thomas More 14

AA Jr Varsity : Windsor 15 - Pitt Meadows 0

Grade 8 : Vancouver College 8 - St Thomas More 0

High School Soccer Championships

  • Congratulations to Joey Audia and the Notre Dame Jugglers on winning the Silver Medal in the Provincial AA High School Varsity Soccer Championships.  The Jugglers were undefeated heading into the Championship Final and it took an overtime goal by Panorama Ridge to secure a 3-2 victory.

High School Football Semi-Final Results

  • It will be the Battle of the Birds next Saturday to determine 2008 AAA Football supremacy.  Saturday's Subway Bowl match-up features the #1 -ranked Terry Fox Ravens and the #2-ranked W J Mouat Hawks.   In regular season action the Ravens got the better of the Hawks by a score of 37 - 6 on a wet, muddy field.  In the cozy confines of the Dome, however, the Hawks have proved to be lethal.  It should be a great game between to very good football teams.

  • In AA action the two top-ranked teams will meet as the #1-ranked Seaquam Seahawks take on the #2-ranked South Delta Sun Devils.

  • In AAA semi-final action it was a display of dominance by both the Ravens and the Hawks and there was no doubt early in each game as to who would be victorious. Hawk's running back/receiver/defensive back Boseko Lokombo (330 rushing yards)  proved once again why he is being touted as an NCAA Division 1 prospect and the Hawk's fierce defense led by the #1 tackler in the Eastern Conference, middle linebacker Tyler Declare (Grade 11), totally shut down the vaunted Centaur offense.

In the other semi-final game it was the power and depth of the Ravens that wore down the Hyacks.  The Ravens defense led by linebacker Joe Patko never gave the Hyacks a chance to get going recording numerous quarterback sacks and tackles for a loss completely shutting down the Hyack's running and passing attack.  Offensively the Ravens offensive line gave quarterback Prasant Chaube all kinds of time to throw the ball and opened gaping holes for running backs Joe Patko and Tibi Banica.

  • In AA action the Seaquam Seahawks had a slow start spotting the Whalers two early touchdowns. But the Seahawks got untracked behind the running of Sean O'Neill and Buddy Hutchinson and the calm leadership of quarterback Cody Hawkins.  O'Neill had his biggest game of the year recording 239 rushing yards including a 92 yard touchdown run.  Defensive lineman Jake Vanderwood anchored a solid Seahawks defense which shut down the Whaler's offense in the second half.

AAA EASTERN CONFERENCE

W.J. Mouat 6 at Terry Fox 37 -
One of the most eagerly anticipated games of the 2008 AAA football season turned out to be another lop-sided win for the Terry Fox Ravens (9-0, 6-0) over the number 2- ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks (8-1, 5-1).

Mt. Douglas 28 at West Vancouver 7
-- The West Vancouver Highlanders (3-4-1, 1-4) were hoping to grab the final playoff berth in the Western Conference, but came up against the determined Mt Douglas Rams(7-2, 3-2).

Despite gutsy efforts by Highlander's quarterback/safety Blake Davies, who turned in one of his best defensive outings of the season, and slot back Stefan Dupuis (playing with a broken arm) the Highlanders just couldn't match the explosive Ram's offense and finished the season with a disappointing loss..

High School Football

Vernon 43 - Seaton 0:  Senior quarterback/defensive back Matt Walker (see Players of the Week videos) scored twice to lead the  Panthers over WL Seaton and secure 3rd place in the Okanagan Conference.

Next up for the Panthers: this week-BYE.

Terry Fox 50 at Holy Cross 7:  The Terry Fox Ravens (8-0, 5-0)  got their work done along the ground as Joe Patko carried just four times for an amazing 166 yards and two touchdowns, a rushing average of 41.5 yards per-carry. Patko also led the defense with six tackles and three assists.

Up next for Terry Fox: Saturday host W.J. Mouat

West Vancouver 7 at Vancouver College 41:  On Saturday, the Irish shut down the Highlanders (3-3-1, 1-3) at O'Hagan Field to clinch  the Western Conference title. West Van (Blake Davies, Stefan Dupuis) must hope for a win over the Mt Douglas Rams to have any chance to qualify for post-season play.

Up next for West Vancouver: Saturday host Mt. Douglas at 1:30 pm.

Carson Graham 20 at Mt. Douglas 46: The Carson Graham Eagles (Adam Zaruba) ran into an aggressive Ram's team in Victoria and came up short.

Up next for Carson Graham: Friday host New Westminster

W.J. Mouat 41 at Centennial 34: The Hawks ran out to an early lead over the Centaurs scoring two majors in just seven plays and seemed poised to cruise to an easy win.  Leading 34-12 going into the 4th quarter, lightning struck quickly as the Centaurs scored three quick touchdowns off a short run, an interception return  and a fumble by the Hawks quarterback.  After a 2-point convert the Centaurs tied the score at 34-34.  It looked like the game would be decided in overtime except for a spectacular 75-yard run by the Hawk's Bo Lokombo.  Outstanding junior linebacker Tyler Declare led the Hawks defense with 10 tackles.

Up next for W.J. Mouat: Saturday at Terry Fox

Windsor 7 at Seaquam 14 -- Running back Sean O'Neill scored on  a six-yard run and quarterback Cody Hawkins was five-of-seven for 128 yards passing while Jacob Vanderwood led the Seaquam defense with six tackles to preserve the #1 ranked Seahawks' undefeated regular season.

Up next for Seaquam: Friday at Burnaby Central, 5:00pm at Burnaby Lake

Earl Marriott 6 at John Barsby 22:  The Mariners (2-6, 2-3)  opened the scoring with a 70-yard scoring strike from Kurt Bardua on third play from scrimmage. Overall Bardua threw for 110 yards.

Up next for Earl Marriott: Friday host South Delta

Mission 29 at Rick Hansen 21:  Two fumbles that led to touchdowns, and a key penalty late in the contest called on one of its own fans wound up hurting the No. 9 Rick Hansen Hurricanes (4-4, 3-3) on Friday. But you couldn't take anything away from an opportunistic and efficient Mission (Logan MacLeod) offence, as the Roadrunners (5-3, 3-2) did what they needed to bounce back from last week's shutout defeat at the hands of South Delta and fashion a 29-21 win over the 'Canes.

Up next for Mission: Saturday host Frank Hurt

Canada West:  Last week's scores - Saskatchewan 16 - SFU 4: Regina 38 - Alberta 31 Calgary 25 - Manitoba 18.

The Wild, Wild West is in for an interesting weekend.  SFU (5-3) is currently sitting in first place in the Canada West but they must sit and nervously await the outcome of this weekend's game to find out just where they will finish and who their opponent will be in the first round of the playoffs.

Saskatchewan (5-2) visits UBC (2 - 5) - Friday 7:30pm at Thunderbird Stadium - and a Saskatchewan win cements first place for the Huskies.  Calgary (5 - 2) goes up against Alberta (1 - 6) while Regina (4 -3) takes on Manitoba (3 - 4).  It is not inconceivable that FOUR teams could wind up tied with 5-3 records! While it is not our habit to dwell on negatives, the following video clip is an illustration of a player's action that can never be condoned or tolerated on the football field.

The offending player (#5 in white) was ejected from the game but maybe a harsher penalty should apply to this type of action.

Point Grey, BC  - In one of the most hotly contested Shrum Bowl's in recent history it came down to a last-play 37- yard field goal for the resurgent Clan to win a 20-19 squeaker over the 'Birds  and re-claim the Bowl.  Most importantly they are guaranteed a playoff spot in the ultra-competitive Canada West Conference.

With the win SFU continues a story-book 2008 season with two wins over cross-town rival UBC, and wins over Manitoba (2007 National Champs), Saskatchewan and Calgary.  With the win last night, SFU (5-2)  takes over first place in the Canada West pending the outcome of this weekend's games.  Next up for SFU: travel to Saskatoon for their final regular season game on October 18.

UBC, on the other hand, will finish out of the playoffs slipping to a 2-5 record with one home game remaining against Saskatchewan on October 25.

Congratulations to Dave Johnson and his coaching staff in turning the Clan around to become a force is the CIS once again.

In special pre-game ceremony UBC's 5th year defensive back Alex Betts was presented with one of two Bobby Ackles' Scholarships in recognition of his dedication and service to the UBC Thunderbirds.  Congratulations Alex.

It it with great sadness that we mark the passing of Bob Ackles.

As someone who knew Bobby for the best part of forty years to say I am saddened and shocked by his sudden passing would be a gross understatement.

His football career and accomplishments are well documented and most football fans are familiar with Bobby's accomplishments and successes with the CFL and NFL but few may know of his amazing work in support of amateur football and in the community at large. more

It was a Golden Saturday for Keynan Parker at the BC High School Track & Field Championships as he repeated his 2007 performance by winning the Gold Medal in the 100m, 200m and the 4 x 100m relay .

Tom Willcox (Centennial High School) recently set Personal Best marks in three categories:

Shot-put (5.45k) 15.13m
Discus (1.61k) 44.81m
Discus (1.5k)  48.17m

Tom unfortunately will be unable to compete in the BC High School Track and Field Championships due to the one-year transfer "sit-out" rule which is really too bad as his shot-put mark is the best recorded in BC this year.

Jacob Vanderwood (Seaquam High School) recently set a personal best mark by bench pressing 315# for two full reps.  Not bad for a just-turned 17 year!

Greene Opts For Thunderbirds

2007 BC High School Football Player of the Year quarterback Billy Greene tonight signed to play with the UBC Thunderbirds.

Greene, who received offers from several universities, made the decision to attend UBC after visiting recently with SFU, Saskatchewan, Queen's, Laurier and Western Ontario.

"I am very flattered by all the attention I have received for the past few months," said Greene. "but at the end of the day, the academic and athletic opportunity at UBC is just too good to pass up.  It wasn't an easy decision and I wanted to take my time and make sure I was making the right one."

Greene had been touted as the #1 quarterback prospect in the country and was swamped with invitations to visit campuses all across the country.

"I heard from pretty much every university in Canada." said Jerry Mulliss of the National Student Athlete Advisory Council (NSAAC) who has been working with Greene for the past three years. "There is is no doubt in my mind that Billy could play for any of them. It really came down to the best fit for him academically and athletically and I know he has made his choice after looking at all the options."

Billy will join Holy Cross teammate Spencer Betts (see article below) who committed to the Thunderbirds on Friday.

"It's great that Billy and I will continue playing together." said Betts. "We have know each other since elementary school and there is no one I would rather have as a teammate that Billy.  As a quarterback and receiver we have a kind of special connection....he knows where I'm going to be and I know where he is going to throw the ball.  The next five years should be a lot of fun!"

"It's not often that you get three student/athletes like Billy, Spencer and Mitchell Bosch on one team or in one school." said Holy Cross Principal and former SFU head coach  Bob DeJulius.  "We have been honored to have these three young men in our school for the past five years.  Not only are they great football players, they are very positive members of our student body and have set a great example to their fellow students.  They have all made a tremendous impact to our school and we are going to miss them."

Betts Joins Brother at UBC

Pepsi Provincial All Star and the 2007 Subway Bowl Outstanding Offensive Player Spencer Betts will be joining his older brother Alex with the UBC Thunderbirds this Fall.

Spencer, who visited with SFU, Queen's and Wilfred Laurier, committed to the Thunderbirds on Friday evening.

"I sat down with my parents and with Jerry (Mulliss of NSAAC) and we put down all the pro's and con's.  I really liked Queen's and Laurier but in the end it came down to two things.....I didn't really want to move to Ontario and also the opportunity to play with my brother was too much to pass up.  Alex has always been kind of my hero and it's going to be really special for me and my folks for the both of us to be on the same team."

Good Luck Spencer!

Bosch Commits to Laurier

Congratulations to Mitchell Bosch who today committed to play football this fall at Wilfred Laurier University.

Mitchell, the 2007 AAA Defensive Player of the Year, selected Laurier after visiting their campus three weeks ago.

"I was really impressed with the campus and the university," said Bosch. "They have  a smaller campus and it felt really comfortable. Coming from a smaller school like Holy Cross, it almost feels like an extension of high school.  Coach Jeffries and his staff  were great and I'm looking forward to being a Golden Hawk."

Mitchell is the first of the "Three Amigos" from the provincial champion Holy Cross Crusaders to commit.

As mentioned above, Mitchell Bosch is the first of the "Three Amigos" to commit....the other two Billy Greene and Spencer Betts are still visiting several campuses.  Both visited with Laurier last weekend and both are heading out to Queen's University on Feb 25th.  Greene, the #1 quarterback prospect in the country, has already visited with Western and, in addition to Queen's, is also set to visit with the University of Saskatchewan.

"I've kind of got it down to five that I'm really interested in." said Greene. "I've had a whole bunch of invitations and opportunities to visit a lot of schools,  but I'm focusing on UBC, Western, Laurier, Queen's and Saskatchewan.  I really appreciate all the interest I've received but I don't think it's right to accept a visit to a school that I'm not really interested in.  It wouldn't be fair to take a trip for the sake of taking a trip when it costs them a bunch of money which they could use for other recruits."

Betts is also looking at five schools....UBC, Laurier, Queen's, Western and SFU.

"It's going to be a tough decision," said Betts. " There are good things about all the school.  When the smoke clears and all the visits are done, I'll sit down with my folks and Jerry (Mulliss) and put all the pro's and con's on paper which will help me make the right decision."

Two other football clients who are racking up the air miles are Phil Dick and Colton Suffron from St Thomas More. Both just returned from a visit to Regina and both have offers of trips to Calgary, Acadia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and St FX.

Wide receiver Cody Thistle from West Vancouver is receiving interest from Queen's, McGill and UBC.

Sam Ezerins is being recruited by UBC, SFU and Acadia.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Monday, November 5/07

In arguably the most entertaining high school football game in BC this year, the #1 ranked  Holy Cross Crusaders proved they were deserving of the ranking as they defeated the #2 ranked St Thomas More Knights 40-34 in a nail-biter at Crusader Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  It was a classic!

Heading into the 3rd quarter, and down by 14 points, the Crusaders took advantage of 3 Knight's miscues and converted all three into touchdowns.

Both teams played a fantastic game and the damp crowd was hugely entertained.  It was a wonderful showcase of high school sport with great sportsmanship being shown by both teams and the game was revenge of a kind for Holy Cross as they avenged their loss to STMC in the JV Provincial Championship two years ago when the majority of players for both teams played in that game.

If it comes to pass that both teams meet again in the AAA Championship it will be a game not to miss.....although what they can do to top the Pepsi Bowl, we just don't know!

Congratulations to both teams......you played a heck of a game!

Weekly Updates

Two weeks ago the BC athletic fraternity lost a great father, coach, friend, colleague and teacher with the untimely passing of Kevin Chin at the age of 51.

Kevin was a long-time teacher  Centennial Secondary where he coached football for several years before devoting himself to his two sons' football teams ......Casey at New Westminster Secondary and Jordan in the Coquitlam Minor Football Association.

For the past 21 years Kevin was involved in the Western Canadian All Star Football Camp at SFU serving as the Head Coach for the past few years.  During his tenure at the Western Canadian Camp the phrase "Win With Chin" was coined by the campers.  Kevin WAS a winner in all phases of his life....high school, university, his career as a teacher and coach and of course in his family life.

We will miss Kevin's infectious personality and his unselfish attitude to life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

The 2007 BC High School Track & Field Championships took place at Swangard Stadium on Friday and Saturday and St Thomas More grade 11 sprinter Keynan Parker simply blew away the competition in the individual men's 100m and 200m.

In the 100m final, Keynan blazed to a Gold Medal in a time of 10.78secs (which is just 0.32 seconds off the record which was set in 1990 by former STMC sprinter Peter Ogilvie).  No-one else in the field managed to break the 11 sec barrier (his closest competitor finished in 11.29 secs). Keynan followed up his 100m victory with a convincing win in the 200m finishing at 21.90....his next closest competitor?...22.60.

Not satisfied with his personal performances, Keynan anchored the STMC 4x100m relay team to a Gold Medal performance winning in 43.08 secs. Then he followed THAT up by helping the STMC 4 x 400 relay team to a Silver Medal.  Not a bad day....3 Golds and 1 Silver!  Way to go Keynan!

Congratulations to Robbie Campbell who has been named the 2006 Delta Male Youth Athlete of the Year.  Robbie starred for the Seaquam Secondary Seahawks in football, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse.  He also plays in the Delta Islanders lacrosse program.  Robbie will be attending UBC in the Fall where he has accepted a scholarship to play football for the Thunderbirds. Congratulations Rob!

Congratulations to Perry Harder who has committed to play for the UBC Thunderbirds in the Fall.

Perry was an outstanding defensive back and special teams player with the Langley Stampeders.

Weekly Updates

The annual Senior Bowl football camp took place last week under torrential rain storms at the BC Lions Training Facility in Surrey and it provided an opportunity for the players to try out the new FieldTurf.  By all accounts the FieldTurf proved to be a huge success.

The annual Senior Bowl All Star game, however, was a different story.   The game was played for the first time at SFU's Terry Fox Field and the elements played havoc all day.  Along with the rain, the players and spectators had to contend with low clouds and terrible visibility....at times the players couldn't even see from one side of the field to the other and the spectators had difficulty even seeing the field.

Even though the conditions for the game were less than ideal, the players had a great opportunity to showcase their talents during the week and several NSAAC athletes turned in outstanding performances and were recognized by the coaches:

Most Valuable Defensive Back:  Perry Harder (Langley Stampeders)

Most Improved Defensive Back:  Alex Babalos (Seaquam Seahawks)

Most Improved Running Back:  Robbie Campbell (Seaquam Seahawks)

Congratulations to all!

Feb 8/2007

News

Ashley Sullivan left on Tuesday to visit with Brock University.  Ashley, a 6' 1" senior forward with Tamanawis Secondary School's Varsity basketball team is one of the top five recruits in BC this year.

The SFU Clansmen football team took a huge step towards returning the Clan to respectability with the hiring of Dave Johnson as their new football coach.  No stranger to BC and the CIS, Dave coached and played  high school, junior and college football  in BC  prior to joining the UBC Thunderbirds as their Defensive Coordinator in 1997 and he played a huge part in helping the T-Birds win the Vanier Cup that same year.

When  then UBC head coach Casey Smith was diagnosed with cancer in 1998,  Dave took over the reins  as head coach.  Dave left the Thunderbirds in 2000 and, following a one-year sabbatical, he joined the Calgary Dinosaurs as the Defensive Coordinator where he stayed for two seasons. Since 2003 Dave has been living and operating a very successful business in Phoenix, Arizona and has acted as an assistant coach at the high school level.

Dave has a huge passion for coaching college football, and when the SFU head coaching position became available, he jumped at the chance to return to BC.

He has taken another very positive step by hiring Shawn Olson as one of his full time assistant coaches.  Shawn was a very successful quarterback at Holy Cross HS in Surrey and had a great 4-year career with the Surrey Rams before joining the UBC Thunderbirds and leading them to the Vanier Cup victory in 1997.  After graduating from UBC, Shawn joined Coach Johnson with the Calgary Dinosaurs where he coached for two years.  Shawn, though, wasn't done playing football.  For the past few years he has been playing and coaching (Offensive Coordinator) in the European Football League with the Vienna Vikings where he has been instrumental in that team winning 6 consecutive titles.

We are delighted to welcome Dave and Shawn back to BC and wish them and their staff the very best of luck.

Breaking News.....Ryan Lucas Signs with Alouettes

Western Washington University defensive lineman Ryan Lucas has signed a free agent contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Ryan is the first NSAAC client to sign a professional contract.

Lucas, 22, was a three-year letter winner for Western. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound tackle had 15 tackles, 11 of them unassisted, this season, including 3.5 tackles for loss. He had one sack, and also recovered a fumble.

"I'm really excited, I'm walking around with a smile on my face," Lucas said. "This is something I've worked toward for the last couple years. I'm getting an opportunity and I'm going to prepare as hard as I can. I want go to into training camp and make an impact."

Lucas graduated from North Delta Senior Secondary School prior to joining the SFU Clansmen for one year.  He then joined NSAAC and worked out with Robert Holland of The Program while playing in the BCJFL for one year before transferring to Western Washington.

"Having the contract signed now allows me to focus, to know what I need to do and how I need to train," said Lucas. "They want me to play defensive tackle. I can get the playbook, I can learn everything inside and out, so when I go to training camp I'll be ready ... I'm going to have to get used to the speed of the game."

Weekly Updates

High School and Community Football

The Seaquam Seahawks, led by a 3 touchdown performance from Tanner Gill, outlasted the Frank Hurt Hornets in AA exhibition action on Friday.  The Seahawk offensive and defensive lines, anchored by Gord Randall, gave the Hornets trouble for the entire game.

On the other side of the ball, Hornets quarterback Marc Paquette, threw the ball very well particularly to Jordan Linnen.  Defensively, the Hornets linebacking core were led by Mitch Zwirn who made several crunching tackles.

The AAA #1-ranked St Thomas More Knights took on the Notre Dame Jugglers in their traditional pre-season exhibition game at Burnaby Lakes.  The Jugglers jumped out to an early lead but the Knights answered straight back and, once they took the lead, never looked back winning 24-13.

Junior quarterback Alex Thierman, in his first start for the Varsity due to an injury to starter Denny Dumas, showed that the Knights quarterbacking is in excellent shape. Running back Keynan Parker showed he is learning the football skills to go along with his blinding speed. The Bosa Boys, Sean and Nathan, both had outstanding games and receiver Mike Chayka, while he did not have a ball thrown to him, made some excellent blocks and tackles on special teams.   Next up for the Knights......#2-ranked Vancouver College (Saturday, 1:00pm at Vancouver College)

The AAA Holy Cross Crusaders traveled to Vancouver Island on Friday to take on the AA Barsby Bulldogs and came away with a 43-9 win. Grade 11 running back and linebacker Mitchell Bosch, who only played in the first half, turned in an outstanding game scoring one touchdown and led the the defense with ten tackles.  Quarterback/Receivers Billy Greene and Spencer Betts interchanged throughout the game with both throwing touchdown passes to each other. The Crusaders go on the road again on Friday to play  Mt Boucherie in Kelowna.

The previously unbeaten Langley Stampeders took it on the chin in VMFL Midget action on Sunday afternoon losing 35-0 to the Cloverdale Bengals. QB Marc McVeigh had very little time to throw the ball in the face of a constant pass rush but still managed to complete several passes and a number of excellent runs.  Perry Harder continued his hard-nosed style of football on defense and special teams.  Offensive guard Kreig Barker was one of the only bright spots on offensive line while receiver Chris Grimes-Goard had few opportunities to catch the ball but made some good blocks.  Andrew Chornohus had another very strong game at defensive end/linebacker and was robbed of a touchdown when he stripped the ball from a Bengal running back only to have the play blown dead on an early whistle.  The Stampeders (1-1) travel to Westside (0-2) on Sunday looking to get back to their winning ways.

The Coquitlam Chargers traveled to Cowichan on Sunday and came home with a 37-0 win.  Coquitlam is led by quarterback Jeff McCann.  (Stats unavailable at press time)

West Coast Softball Academy and NSAAC Form Partnership

Kim Wright, president of the West Coast Softball Academy, and Jerry Mulliss, president of NSAAC, announced today that the two organizations have formed a partnership to provide increased opportunities for their clients to attain university athletic scholarships.

The West Coast Softball Academy was founded in 1996 by Kim Wright.  Kim  has been impressing athletes, coaches and parents ever since with her impressive knowledge and teaching skills. Kim played softball for 20 years as an all star pitcher. Kim  was the Head Coach of the Venezuela National Team for 5 years and a guest coach for Team Canada at the 1999 Pan Am Games. Kim is recognized worldwide in the softball community for her instructing skills in all aspects of the game, with an emphasis on pitching and batting.

"This partnership is a great fit for our students, " said Wright.  "We are now able to offer a full range of services to them and their parents.  Both our companies have great proven success records and NSAAC is an acknowledged  leader in the field of assisting student-athletes to achieve the dream of attaining university and college scholarships."

"I knew the reputation of the West Coast Softball Academy and I was really flattered when Kim first approached me." said Jerry Mulliss.  " I am delighted to be affiliated with Kim and her staff and students.  The biggest secret in successful recruiting is knowing what to do and to find the right fit academically and athletically for our clients and I am confident that , with Kim's knowledge and expertise on the technical side and NSAAC's experience on the recruiting side, we will be able to provide the ultimate in service for our student-athletes and their parents."

Since the inception of Title 1X in the US (which provides for equity in funding for male and female university sports), women's sports have experienced a huge rise in popularity and are providing great opportunities for females in many different sports.

"Women's college sports have become way more balanced and competitive in recent years," said Mulliss. "So has  recruiting.  In order to be successfully recruited these days recruiting you can longer just send out a bunch of letters and hope for the best.....that just doesn't do it.  It has to be done on a more professional and targeted basis."
