This Week in High School Football

AAA EASTERN CONFERENCE

W.J. Mouat 6 at Terry Fox 37 -
One of the most eagerly anticipated games of the 2008 AAA football season turned out to be another lop-sided win for the Terry Fox Ravens (9-0, 6-0) over the number 2- ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks (8-1, 5-1).

Audia Leads Jugglers to Berth in Lower Mainland's: new NSAAC member Joey Audia  scored one goal and assisted on one other to lead the Notre Dame Jugglers to a 4-1 win over the St Patrick Celtics and clinch the divisional title. This week the Jugglers travel to Richmond to compete in the Lower Mainland Championships.

High School Football

Vernon 43 - Seaton 0:  Senior quarterback/defensive back Matt Walker (see Players of the Week videos) scored twice to lead the  Panthers over WL Seaton and secure 3rd place in the Okanagan Conference.

Next up for the Panthers: this week-BYE.

Terry Fox 50 at Holy Cross 7:  The Terry Fox Ravens (8-0, 5-0)  got their work done along the ground as Joe Patko carried just four times for an amazing 166 yards and two touchdowns, a rushing average of 41.5 yards per-carry. Patko also led the defense with six tackles and three assists.

Up next for Terry Fox: Saturday host W.J. Mouat

West Vancouver 7 at Vancouver College 41:  On Saturday, the Irish shut down the Highlanders (3-3-1, 1-3) at O'Hagan Field to clinch  the Western Conference title. West Van (Blake Davies, Stefan Dupuis) must hope for a win over the Mt Douglas Rams to have any chance to qualify for post-season play.

Up next for West Vancouver: Saturday host Mt. Douglas at 1:30 pm.

Carson Graham 20 at Mt. Douglas 46: The Carson Graham Eagles (Adam Zaruba) ran into an aggressive Ram's team in Victoria and came up short.

Up next for Carson Graham: Friday host New Westminster

W.J. Mouat 41 at Centennial 34: The Hawks ran out to an early lead over the Centaurs scoring two majors in just seven plays and seemed poised to cruise to an easy win.  Leading 34-12 going into the 4th quarter, lightning struck quickly as the Centaurs scored three quick touchdowns off a short run, an interception return  and a fumble by the Hawks quarterback.  After a 2-point convert the Centaurs tied the score at 34-34.  It looked like the game would be decided in overtime except for a spectacular 75-yard run by the Hawk's Bo Lokombo.  Outstanding junior linebacker Tyler Declare led the Hawks defense with 10 tackles.

Up next for W.J. Mouat: Saturday at Terry Fox

Windsor 7 at Seaquam 14 -- Running back Sean O'Neill scored on  a six-yard run and quarterback Cody Hawkins was five-of-seven for 128 yards passing while Jacob Vanderwood led the Seaquam defense with six tackles to preserve the #1 ranked Seahawks' undefeated regular season.

Up next for Seaquam: Friday at Burnaby Central, 5:00pm at Burnaby Lake

Earl Marriott 6 at John Barsby 22:  The Mariners (2-6, 2-3)  opened the scoring with a 70-yard scoring strike from Kurt Bardua on third play from scrimmage. Overall Bardua threw for 110 yards.

Up next for Earl Marriott: Friday host South Delta

Mission 29 at Rick Hansen 21:  Two fumbles that led to touchdowns, and a key penalty late in the contest called on one of its own fans wound up hurting the No. 9 Rick Hansen Hurricanes (4-4, 3-3) on Friday. But you couldn't take anything away from an opportunistic and efficient Mission (Logan MacLeod) offence, as the Roadrunners (5-3, 3-2) did what they needed to bounce back from last week's shutout defeat at the hands of South Delta and fashion a 29-21 win over the 'Canes.

Up next for Mission: Saturday host Frank Hurt

CIS College Football Scoreboard

AUS:  St Francis Xavier 31 - Acadia 20: The X-Men clinched second place in the AUS and will play St Mary's this weekend in a mean-nothing game to wind up the regular season.  The X-Men are expected to rest several players to get ready for the playoff run next week when they will host Mt Allison.

AUS: St Mary's 31 - Mt A 16: With the win SMU locked up first place in the AUS and earned the bye for the first round of the playoffs. Mt A takes on Acadia (0 -7) this Saturday in a game which will see Acadia playing for pride trying to win their first game of the season.

OUA: McMaster 40 - Windsor 11: McMaster ( 4 - 4) finishes in 6th place and Windsor (3 - 5) in 7th place

OUA: Western 47 - Guelph 16: Western (7 - 1) winds up in 2nd place while Guelph (4 - 4) in 4th place

OUA; Queen's 38 - Waterloo 22: Queen's (8 -0) takes 1st place and Waterloo (2 - 6) drops to 9th.

Quebec: Laval 41 - Sherbrooke 3: Laval finishes with McGill in a meaningless game.

Canada West:  Last week's scores - Saskatchewan 16 - SFU 4: Regina 38 - Alberta 31 Calgary 25 - Manitoba 18.

The Wild, Wild West is in for an interesting weekend.  SFU (5-3) is currently sitting in first place in the Canada West but they must sit and nervously await the outcome of this weekend's game to find out just where they will finish and who their opponent will be in the first round of the playoffs.

Saskatchewan (5-2) visits UBC (2 - 5) - Friday 7:30pm at Thunderbird Stadium - and a Saskatchewan win cements first place for the Huskies.  Calgary (5 - 2) goes up against Alberta (1 - 6) while Regina (4 -3) takes on Manitoba (3 - 4).  It is not inconceivable that FOUR teams could wind up tied with 5-3 records! The offending player (#5 in white) was ejected from the game but maybe a harsher penalty should apply to this type of action.

SFU Wins 2008 Shrum Bowl

Point Grey, BC  - In one of the most hotly contested Shrum Bowl's in recent history it came down to a last-play 37- yard field goal for the resurgent Clan to win a 20-19 squeaker over the 'Birds  and re-claim the Bowl.  Most importantly they are guaranteed a playoff spot in the ultra-competitive Canada West Conference.

With the win SFU continues a story-book 2008 season with two wins over cross-town rival UBC, and wins over Manitoba (2007 National Champs), Saskatchewan and Calgary.  With the win last night, SFU (5-2)  takes over first place in the Canada West pending the outcome of this weekend's games.  Next up for SFU: travel to Saskatoon for their final regular season game on October 18.

UBC, on the other hand, will finish out of the playoffs slipping to a 2-5 record with one home game remaining against Saskatchewan on October 25.

Congratulations to Dave Johnson and his coaching staff in turning the Clan around to become a force is the CIS once again.

In special pre-game ceremony UBC's 5th year defensive back Alex Betts was presented with one of two Bobby Ackles' Scholarships in recognition of his dedication and service to the UBC Thunderbirds.  Congratulations Alex.
