U-18's Win Bronze Medal
Team BC returned to the Football Canada
Cup following a 10-year hiatus with few if any expectations.
"We really didn't know what to expect."
said head coach Tom Kudaba. "After we came back to beat Ontario East
in our first game we thought we had a good shot at being in the Gold
Medal game but Saskatchewan had an excellent defense and we helped
them out quite a bit with our turnovers. After that game we
made a vow that we were not coming home without a medal and the kids
really stepped up to beat Nova Scotia. We are very proud of
our accomplishment after a ten year absence and next year we will be
heading into the Football Canada Cup with a much better idea of what
we need to do."
Led once again by Players of the Game
Carson Williams (QB) and Jonthia Fernandez (DE), BC
dominated Nova Scotia 38-3 to take the Bronze Medal. It was the
second time in three games that both Carson and Jonthia were
selected as Players of the Game..
"It was a great experience," said Kudaba
" and we are looking forward to getting ready for next year's
competition in Alberta. BC is back!"
U-17 Basketball

Football U-18's Win
First Game at Canada Cup
Wolfville, NS:
It was a great evening in Wolfville for
NSAAC clients! Trailing 18-3 at halftime quarterback Carson
Williams started the second half and got BC's explosive offense
going leading the team in an eight play 85 yard drive
culminating in a 7 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Fong (3 for
31, 1 TD). Two minutes later Carson Williams
hit running back Terrell Davis on a 22 yard TD strike to make
the score 17-18..
In the fourth quarter following a BC
field goal (26 yards), Williams connected with Marshall Cook for a
25 yard touchdown to make the final score 27 - 18.
BC's defense held the Ontario East team
to a total of 10 first downs(7 passing, 3 rushing) while BC's
offense racked up 22 (13 passing, 9 rushing).
Defensive end Jonthia Fernandez
was named the Defensive Player of the Game while the Offensive
Player of the Game nod went to Carson Williams.
BC advances to the Semi Finals on
Wednesday and will play Saskatchewan which defeated Manitoba 26 -15
in the first game of the day.
The other Semi Final will feature Nova
Scotia (27 - 24 winners over Alberta) and Quebec (24-6 over Ontario

All the kids who tried out are winners

some very tough decisions to make."

Forty roster spots were on the line on
Sunday at Burnaby Lake as fifty-seven young football players took

Rams.

U-18 Football Exhibition
Game
Head down to Burnaby Lakes on Sunday to
check the 2010 Football BC U-18 Team that will travel to Nova
Scotia in July to represent the Province in the Football Canada Cup.
Fifty four young athletes will be trying to make the final 40-man
roster in an exhibition game against the Big Kahuna Rams Ist & 2nd
year players.
"Having an exhibition game gives a real
look at the kids we will select for Team BC" said U-18 head coach
Tom Kudaba. "It's always better to athletes perform in game
conditions rather than just practice situations. We'll find
out who the "players" are."
Kick off is at 3:00 pm.
Long Time Coach and
Principal Retires
Bob DeJulius, the first and only
Principal of Holy Cross Regional High School, will be retiring up
his principal's desk and hanging up his coaching shoes at the end of
June.
"Bob gave me my first university
coaching job at Simon Fraser back in the late 70's" said NSAAC
president Jerry Mulliss." "A few years later I had the
opportunity to repay the debt by helping him out at Holy Cross where
I spent four years working with the Varsity....one year as Head
Coach. Besides being a tremendous friend, the great
thing about Bob is his loyalty to former students, players, staff
and friends. There is literally nothing he wouldn't do to help
or provide opportunities for the people he cares about......and
there are hundreds of them."
DeJulius graduated from Notre Dame High
School where he starred as a quarterback and was coached by two
legendary football icons - Cal Murphy and Frank Smith.
While still going to UBC he began his coaching
career by taking on his little brother's peewee team in when the
previous coach quit.
From there he coached at Notre Dame with Al Blesch (1961-62) and
Vancouver College (twice) with Cal Murphy beginning in 1963 when he
was still going to UBC and then again in the '80s as head coach
after he was let go at SFU. Bob joined the staff at SFU in the
early 70's where he was an assistant to Lorne Davies, co-head coach
with Pokey Allen and then head coach.
His legendary loyalty to former players is evidenced by the fact
that the Crusaders first head coach was former Clansmen Frank
Roberto and ex-BC Lion and Clansman Glen Jackson has been a teacher
and assistant coach there for eons.
Last weekend the Holy Cross Alumni held a gathering in his honor
and created the Bob DeJulius Alumni Scholarship Award and retired a
Holy Cross football jersey which now hangs in the gym. In addition
the school has re-named the football stadium as " Robert
DeJulius Field".
"Some people think of Bob as only passionate
about football.....wrong" said Jerry Mulliss. "Whenever the
track team, soccer team, basketball or volleyball teams are
competing.... Bob is there. Whenever the choir is
performing.....Bob is there. Whenever the band is
performing.....Bob is there. Whenever the dramatics arts
departments puts on a play.....Bob is there. Bob is passionate
about the whole school not just part of it. He is leaving big
shoes to fill."
Those shoes will be filled by new Principal Chris Blesch (son of
legendary Notre Dame principal and football coach Al Blesch).
Blesch is no stranger to Holy Cross having taught and coached there
prior to moving into administrative roles first as the principal at
St Catherines Elementary and recently as Principal of St Jean
Brebeuf high school in Abbotsford.
Don't for a moment think that Bob will shuffle off into
retirement quietly....he has 13 grand children and will probably
wind up coaching some of them in the future.
Happy retirement Bob and thanks for all you have done and the
effects you have made on so many lives.

Football BC's U-18 Team
BC Taking Shape
Eighty
of the top prep football players in BC attended the Football BC U-18
TeamBC training camp at Simon Fraser University this weekend.
The eighty players invited to the camp
predominantly feature players who will be entering their Junior and
Senior years in the Fall of 2010 plus a handful of players who will
graduate in June but who's birthdates make them eligible for the
U-18 standard.....they must be under 18 as of July 31, 2010
All the invitees had been selected from
several tryout camps held throughout the Province in the last 2
months.
"We are really impressed with the talent
level" said Kudaba, "We have to cut down to 54 players in the next
week and then down to 40 players after that. There will be
some tough decisions to make."

NSAAC
members, including quarterbacks Carson Williams
(left, who is headed to UBC in the Fall) and Tyler Fong
(right, Mt Douglas Secondary) had impressive outings in the
offensive backfield while offensive lineman Zach Rousseau (Mt
Douglas Secondary/Victoria Spartans) showed he has the ability and
tools to play at the next level.
Both quarterbacks showed that they
have the arm and running ability to play at the university level
(check their hi-lights in the Plays of the Week above).
Defensively, linebacker Buddy
Hutchison (Seaquam HS/Big Kahuna Rams) and defensive ends JT
Fernandez (Holy Cross) and Jason Bell (Seaquam/Big Kahuna
rams) had strong outings and look to be in good position to make the
54-man cut.
"Our next phase is to bring the 54-man
roster back in early June for a couple days and play an exhibition
game before making the final decision on the 40-man roster" said
Kudaba "Then we will have another short training camp in the first
week of July before traveling to Halifax to compete in the Football
Canada Cup."
This will be a return to the Football
Canada Cup for Football BC has they have not competed in the Cup for
nine years due to differences in philosophy with the age
eligibility.
"Football BC was instrumental in
starting the Football Canada Cup in the 1990's" said NSAAC's Jerry
Mulliss (former Football BC President and Football Canada
Vice-President). "Originally the Football Canada Cup was designed to
have a National Championship event for graduating high school
seniors and for the first couple of years it went really well.
Then a couple of other Provinces lobbied to raise the age to 20 &
Under. Football BC decided that there were plenty of
opportunities for players of that age to compete in the Junior or
Collegiate level and consequently withdrew. Now that Football
Canada has lowered the age range to Under-18 (similar to basketball)
it makes a lot of sense for Football BC to compete once again."
"Lowering the age to U-18 will, I think
be a huge benefit to the kids and to recruiters" said Dino Geremia
Program Director for Football BC. "The great majority of the players
in Team BC are young men heading into their Grade 11 and Grade 12
years and are some of the best up-and-coming players in the Province
from both high school and community programs."
The 2010 Football Canada Cup will be
played from July 10 - 17 at Acadia University in Wolfeville, Nova
Scotia and will feature British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

Scott Clark
is leaving the SFU men's basketball program following a 14
year stint as head coach and is moving to take the same
position with the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
While at Simon Fraser, Clark recruited and coached a number
of players who have gone on to successful professional
basketball careers and who have played for Canada' national
team, including Novel Thomas, Peter Guarasci, Richard
Anderson, and Pasha Bains.
A native of Kelowna, Clark has had a long and successful
coaching career. He succeeded former Clan player Jay Triano,
now head coach with the Toronto Raptors, as head coach of
the Clan. After a successful high school coaching career at
Nanaimo Secondary, a year as an assistant at the University
of Victoria, and three seasons as an assistant at Malaspina
College, Clark joined Triano's coaching staff at SFU where
he served as an assistant during the 1992-93 season. The
following year Clark returned to Nanaimo Secondary,
compiling an 85-49 lifetime record, before taking over as
head coach of the Clan in 1995-96.
In his second season with SFU (1996-1997), Clark was named
NAIA PacWest coach of the year after guiding the Clan to
second place in the league. He led the Clan to a third-place
finish in the team's inaugural season in Canada West and in
2002 he guided the Clan to its first-ever Pacific Division
title and the third best record in Canada West.
Clark has a Master's Degree in Education (Coaching Studies),
and is a certified Level 4 coach. During the summer months
Clark has worked with both the National and Provincial
teams, while running various basketball camps and clinics in
the Lower Mainland. He was Co-Coach of the Provincial
Under-19 team that won the Gold Medal at the National
Championship in 1994 and has served as an assistant coach
for the B.C. Under-17 team.
We wish Scott all the best of luck in his new position with
the Wolfpack. |

AAA Boys Moves to Langley
|
|
The BC High
School Boys' Basketball Association announced last Friday
that they are moving the AAA Championship Tournament to the
Langley Event Centre in 2011.
"We will have a lot more flexibility" said John Buis
(Tournament Director), "In addition to the arena which will
seat close to 6,500 fans, we have access to three additional
basketball courts, a modern audio-visual system and a 500
seat banquet facility."
The move means that there will be two solid weeks of high
school boys basketball championship action at the Event
Centre with the A Boys Tournament running from March 9-13
followed by the AAA Boys from March 15 - 19, 2011.
The move from the PNE Agrodome to the LEC is seen as great
positive for the student-athletes, coaches and fans.
"It is good for
our student-athletes, our fans and our sponsors" said Buis,
"We have clearly had an upswing in the tournament over the
last few years, and we believe this move will help to
continue the growth of the event."
The LEC plays
host to the Langley Chiefs (BCHL), the BC Titans IBL
franchise and Trinity Western University basketball and
volleyball teams, the Langley Thunder (Western Lacrosse) as
well as Basketball BC's provincial and regional training

It is with shock and sadness that we acknowledge the sudden passing
of Bernd Dittrich quarterback of the Simon Fraser Clansmen.
He was
21 years old. He is survived by his family in Austria.
While
cause of death has yet to be officially determined,
SFU’s head football coach, Dave Johnson, said he had
learned at the hospital in New Westminster that Dittrich
had a previously undetected heart condition. Said
Johnson: “He was a special young man. He is a kid who
was a great example to our young guys, and a leader for
our older guys. He was a great kid. We have 94 guys in
the locker room and Bernie was one of the leaders of
that group.” Johnson added that Dittrich was using
swimming as a means of rehabilitating an injured
shoulder that had kept him out of the last two games.
“Our hearts go out to Bernd’s family,” said SFU's Senior
Director of Athletics, Dr. David Murphy. “The SFU
athletics community has lost an exceptional young man.
Bernd was not only a great athlete on the field, but
also an inspiring individual in all aspects of life. We
will miss him tremendously. “He was an enthusiastic
leader, someone who was always willing to help out; just
a terrific kid. The whole (SFU Athletics) department,
not just the football team, is grieving.”
While the third-year Bachelor of Science student played
a minor role with the team during his first season,
Dittrich was named starting quarterback of the Clan in
2008. In his first career start, he led SFU to their
first victory in over three years, a 24-10 win over UBC.
Following the victory, an emotional Dittrich fought back
tears while describing how much the win meant to his
teammates and coaching staff.
In 2008, Dittrich led the Clan to their best record
since 2003 (5-3), a fourth-quarter comeback win in the
2008 Shrum Bowl against UBC, and an appearance in the
Canada West Hardy Cup final. A shoulder injury in 2009
limited Dittrich to six games this past season. Playing
in 24 total games for the Clan, Dittrich threw for 2684
yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 763 yards and
eight touchdowns.
Known affectionately as ‘Bernie,’ Dittrich was an
inspiration to his teammates, and was known for his
enthusiasm and tremendous work ethic. He will be greatly
missed.

Walker signs with Saskatchewan
VSS Panthers’ grad Matt Walker, 17, has earned
a full-tuition scholarship to play CIS football with the University of
Saskatchewan Huskies this fall.
VSS
grad Matt Walker has no illusions that making the leap to Canadian
Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football straight out of high school will be
easy.
The Panthers’ star quarterback, who earned a full-tuition
scholarship with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, got a glimpse
of what the bigger, stronger, faster CIS game will be like while
attending the Huskies’ annual Dog’s Breakfast fundraiser recently.
Walker, who tried out as a slotback, was one of 10 prospects to be
interviewed in front of a crowd of 2,000 ardent football fans at the
banquet.
“You stand up to be presented and stand beside a CFL
guy, and then I realize I’m standing beside a guy that’s 6-foot-10ish
and about 310 pounds or so,” grinned Walker, who turns 18 in July. “He
made me look like a little girl. You look around, and that’s like 90 per
cent of the people there.”
Undaunted, the ultra-athletic Walker
looks forward to the challenge, and hopes to add to the accolades – B.C.
High School Football Interior Conference Offensive MVP as the Panthers’
quarterback, and B.C. Senior Bowl Wide Receiver MVP – he has already
collected. He also knows those giants towering over him will be the same
ones blocking for him on the field.
“Intimidating? At first, yes, but then you don’t really notice it,
and then it’s just teammates. They’re really, really helpful, especially
since I’m coming right out of high school.”
With calls from
around 20 universities over the past year, Walker has visited campuses
all over Canada. From Halifax in the east to SFU and UBC in the west,
he’s been all over the map.
“What it came down to was I just got
a feel for it,” said Walker, of the Huskies’ program. “U of S has been
one of the best teams in Canada for many, many years and they have a
very good reputation.
“Since the season ended, I’ve been doing
workouts all over Canada, so it feels good to be with one team now.”
Walker will have the chance to get reacquainted with an old adversary –
Adam Nesbitt. He quarterbacked the Seaton Sonics before redshirting as a
receiver with the Huskies last season.
“I never really met him or
knew him (in Vernon), but after spring camp, I’d say he’s a pretty good
guy,” said Walker, of Nesbitt. “It’s good to have an honest opinion.”
Asked if Nesbitt had any advice for him coming to Saskatchewan, Walker
laughed: “Bring a coat.”
Added Walker: “He’s kind of in a
learning curve with me, too. It’s a tough haul coming out of high school
and going into the CIS level like that.”
Whether Walker cracks the Huskies’ lineup, or opts to redshirt his
first year, is still in the air, although he appears to be leaning
towards the latter.
“I want to be great, both for myself and for
my teammates,” said Walker. “I don’t want to be going out there not
really knowing what I want to do and hurting my team in any way.
“I want to make sure I know the ropes a little bit better, and if that
means redshirting... I’ll be happy to do that.”
Panthers’ head
coach Tim Thorpe, who knows several Huskies alumni, believes
Saskatchewan will be a good fit for Walker.
“Brian Towriss (head
coach), is a phenomenal coach. Matt’s going to have fun out there for
sure.
“There’s a chance he could play, and play a lot... if they
give him a shot. The kid is right up there for being one of the most
athletic kids I’ve ever coached. They’re lucky to have him.”
To
help bolster the Panthers’ roster last season, Walker made a deal with
several of his buddies, one he wasn’t sure he would enjoy that much.
“I got a couple of my friends to play football for us, and in return, I
had to play basketball for them.
“It was kind of a trade, but I
really enjoyed it. Obviously, I wasn’t that good. It was my first year
of playing basketball, ever. I tried basketball skills in Grade 10 once,
and pretty much got laughed at the whole time.
“I’m very bad at not being good at a sport. It definitely helped me
because, coming into a sport where I’m not competing for one of the best
players on the team, it helps put you into your place and puts things
into perspective.”

Calgary Dino Linebacker Duncan
Mclean has been suspended as a
result of positive test for anabolic
steroids.
OTTAWA - The Canadian Centre for
Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced
today that a Canadian
Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football
athlete, Duncan McLean, has
committed an anti-doping rule
violation. The violation occurred
during an out-of-competition doping
control conducted on March 20, 2009.
The anti-doping rule violation is a
result of the athlete's urine sample
returning an adverse analytical
finding for Oxymetholone
metabolites, a prohibited substance
according to the 2009 World
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited
List. Oxymetholone is a very toxic
anabolic steroid with serious
potential side effects.
In
response to the CCES' notification
of the adverse analytical finding,
Mr. McLean waived his right to a
hearing and acknowledged the
commission of an anti-doping rule
violation. Mr. McLean has received a
sanction of a two-year period of
ineligibility.
Paul Melia,
President and CEO of the CCES, said
"The CCES works closely with CIS to
conduct a comprehensive anti-doping
program and appreciates the
commitment to clean sport shown by
CIS, by officials at Canadian
universities, and by the great
majority of student-athletes."
"Hard work is the best way to
achieve excellence and we can be
proud that the vast majority of CIS
student-athletes are training hard
and competing fairly," said CIS
Chief Executive Officer, Marg
McGregor. "However, some individuals
exercise poor judgement in terms of
the choices they make to meet their
goals."
"The University
of Calgary is unequivocally opposed
to the use of banned substances by
our student-athletes," said Kevin
Boyles, Director of Athletics. "We
have a zero-tolerance policy both at
the UofC and in CIS. We are fully
supportive of the Canadian
Anti-Doping Program and hope that
this unfortunate situation sends a
strong message throughout the
league."
The CCES is an
independent, national, non-profit
organization. Our mission, to foster
ethical sport for all Canadians, is
carried out through research,
promotion, education, detection and
deterrence, as well as through
programs and partnerships with other
organizations.

The National Student Athlete Advisory Council is
totally opposed to the use of
performance-enhancing drugs and is fully
supportive of the CCES, WADA, CIS and NCAA

Fall.
Blake, one the highest recruited players coming out of BC this year,
had visited several schools recently and after looking at all the
pro's and con's he opted for an opportunity to attend and play for
one of the premier universities in Canada.

a terrific reputation that, at the end of the day, it just seems
like the right place for me." said Blake. "I'm looking forward to
the challenge of competing for a starting spot within the next
couple of years."

25th Annual Western Canadian All Star Camp
It seems like it was just yesterday that a fellow by the name of
Larry Reda had an idea of holding a football camp in the summer
at Simon Fraser University and now the camp is celebrating its
25th Anniversary.
The camp is now wholly owned by the football program at SFU but
Larry, at 75 years of age, still plays a huge role as the General
Manager.
"I'm so proud of what we have accomplished over the past 25 years,"
said Reda. "When I think of how many kids have come through this
camp and gone on to great careers at university and professional
teams all over North America it make my head swim!"
The camp has grown to such a size that it has become necessary to
split the camp into a Junior Camp (11-14 yrs of age) and a
Senior Camp (15 - 18 yrs of age) over a two-week period.
"From the perspective of our football program, the camps are just
great." said Dave Johnson, Head Coach of the SFU Clansmen.
"We get to spend two weeks doing what we love to do.....coach
football with a bunch of great kids and other coaches from outside
our staff. It gives us a chance to give something back to the
football community while connecting with players, coaches and
parents and giving them an opportunity to experience the university
environment. Our coaches and players look forward the camps
every year and I can't thank Larry Reda and Lou
DesLauriers (SFU Camp Director/Defensive Coordinator) enough for
all their efforts.....they make my job really easy."
The Camp Staff is led by Camp Head Coach
Tom Kudaba (currently Head Coach at Terry Fox HS and SFU
Alumnus) and features the SFU Coaching Staff augmented by coaches
from high school and community programs.
The Junior Camp runs from July 7 thru' July 11th and the Senior Camp
runs from July 14 thru' 18th.
