Olson Named UBC Head
Coach
UBC Director of Athletics, Bob Philip,
today announced the appointment of Shawn Olson as the new
Head Football Coach.
Olson, a native of Surrey BC, has a
close connection with UBC having been the last quarterback to lead
the Thunderbirds to a Vanier Cup in 1997. Most recently, Shawn
was the offensive coordinator at Simon Fraser University for the
past three years. Prior to joining the Clan, Shawn played and
coached with the Vienna Vikings in the European League setting
several league records along the way.
Before attending UBC, Shawn was an
outstanding athlete at Holy Cross Regional High School in Surrey
where he had a very successful career as the leader of the football
and basketball teams and was regarded as one of the toughest
athletes ever to play for the Crusaders.
He carried that reputation with him when
he spent a stint with the Surrey Rams and then on to the UBC
Thunderbirds.
A borne leader, Shawn is sure to imbue
the Thunderbird players with his passion for the game and his
unwillingness to accept anything but a 100% effort and commitment.
Congratulations Shawn and good luck.

It is with shock and sadness
that we acknowledge the sudden passing of Bernd Dittrich quarterback
of the Simon Fraser Clansmen.
He was
21 years old. He is survived by his family in Austria.
While
cause of death has yet to be officially determined,
SFU’s head football coach, Dave Johnson, said he had
learned at the hospital in New Westminster that Dittrich
had a previously undetected heart condition. Said
Johnson: “He was a special young man. He is a kid who
was a great example to our young guys, and a leader for
our older guys. He was a great kid. We have 94 guys in
the locker room and Bernie was one of the leaders of
that group.” Johnson added that Dittrich was using
swimming as a means of rehabilitating an injured
shoulder that had kept him out of the last two games.
“Our hearts go out to Bernd’s family,” said SFU's Senior
Director of Athletics, Dr. David Murphy. “The SFU
athletics community has lost an exceptional young man.
Bernd was not only a great athlete on the field, but
also an inspiring individual in all aspects of life. We
will miss him tremendously. “He was an enthusiastic
leader, someone who was always willing to help out; just
a terrific kid. The whole (SFU Athletics) department,
not just the football team, is grieving.”
While the third-year Bachelor of Science student played
a minor role with the team during his first season,
Dittrich was named starting quarterback of the Clan in
2008. In his first career start, he led SFU to their
first victory in over three years, a 24-10 win over UBC.
Following the victory, an emotional Dittrich fought back
tears while describing how much the win meant to his
teammates and coaching staff.
In 2008, Dittrich led the Clan to their best record
since 2003 (5-3), a fourth-quarter comeback win in the
2008 Shrum Bowl against UBC, and an appearance in the
Canada West Hardy Cup final. A shoulder injury in 2009
limited Dittrich to six games this past season. Playing
in 24 total games for the Clan, Dittrich threw for 2684
yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 763 yards and
eight touchdowns.
Known affectionately as ‘Bernie,’ Dittrich was an
inspiration to his teammates, and was known for his
enthusiasm and tremendous work ethic. He will be greatly
missed.

It wasn't the
same atmosphere that accompanied Pepsi Bowl 2007 when traditional
rivals Holy Cross and St. Thomas More were ranked 1-2 in Triple AAA.
Yet for the
Knights (2-5, 2-3), who wanted to leave nothing to chance in terms
of a playoff berth, it's 7-0 win Saturday over the 2007 AAA Champion
Holy Cross Crusaders (0-7, 0-5) was every bit as emotional.
Holy Cross can
only look forward to next year when players like Jonthia Fernandez

Walker signs with Saskatchewan
VSS Panthers’ grad Matt Walker, 17, has earned a
full-tuition scholarship to play CIS football with the University of
Saskatchewan Huskies this fall.
VSS
grad Matt Walker has no illusions that making the leap to Canadian
Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football straight out of high school will be
easy.
The Panthers’ star quarterback, who earned a full-tuition scholarship with
the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, got a glimpse of what the bigger,
stronger, faster CIS game will be like while attending the Huskies’ annual
Dog’s Breakfast fundraiser recently.
Walker, who tried out as a slotback, was one of 10 prospects to be
interviewed in front of a crowd of 2,000 ardent football fans at the
banquet.
“You stand up to be presented and stand beside a CFL guy, and then I realize
I’m standing beside a guy that’s 6-foot-10ish and about 310 pounds or so,”
grinned Walker, who turns 18 in July. “He made me look like a little girl.
You look around, and that’s like 90 per cent of the people there.”
Undaunted, the ultra-athletic Walker looks forward to the challenge, and
hopes to add to the accolades – B.C. High School Football Interior
Conference Offensive MVP as the Panthers’ quarterback, and B.C. Senior Bowl
Wide Receiver MVP – he has already collected. He also knows those giants
towering over him will be the same ones blocking for him on the field.
“Intimidating? At first, yes, but then you don’t really notice it, and then
it’s just teammates. They’re really, really helpful, especially since I’m
coming right out of high school.”
With calls from around 20 universities over the past year, Walker has
visited campuses all over Canada. From Halifax in the east to SFU and UBC in
the west, he’s been all over the map.
“What it came down to was I just got a feel for it,” said Walker, of the
Huskies’ program. “U of S has been one of the best teams in Canada for many,
many years and they have a very good reputation.
“Since the season ended, I’ve been doing workouts all over Canada, so it
feels good to be with one team now.”
Walker will have the chance to get reacquainted with an old adversary – Adam
Nesbitt. He quarterbacked the Seaton Sonics before redshirting as a receiver
with the Huskies last season.
“I never really met him or knew him (in Vernon), but after spring camp, I’d
say he’s a pretty good guy,” said Walker, of Nesbitt. “It’s good to have an
honest opinion.”
Asked if Nesbitt had any advice for him coming to Saskatchewan, Walker
laughed: “Bring a coat.”
Added Walker: “He’s kind of in a learning curve with me, too. It’s a tough
haul coming out of high school and going into the CIS level like that.”
Whether Walker cracks the Huskies’ lineup, or opts to redshirt his first
year, is still in the air, although he appears to be leaning towards the
latter.
“I want to be great, both for myself and for my teammates,” said Walker. “I
don’t want to be going out there not really knowing what I want to do and
hurting my team in any way.
“I want to make sure I know the ropes a little bit better, and if that means
redshirting... I’ll be happy to do that.”
Panthers’ head coach Tim Thorpe, who knows several Huskies alumni, believes
Saskatchewan will be a good fit for Walker.
“Brian Towriss (head coach), is a phenomenal coach. Matt’s going to have fun
out there for sure.
“There’s a chance he could play, and play a lot... if they give him a shot.
The kid is right up there for being one of the most athletic kids I’ve ever
coached. They’re lucky to have him.”
To help bolster the Panthers’ roster last season, Walker made a deal with
several of his buddies, one he wasn’t sure he would enjoy that much.
“I got a couple of my friends to play football for us, and in return, I had
to play basketball for them.
“It was kind of a trade, but I really enjoyed it. Obviously, I wasn’t that
good. It was my first year of playing basketball, ever. I tried basketball
skills in Grade 10 once, and pretty much got laughed at the whole time.
“I’m very bad at not being good at a sport. It definitely helped me because,
coming into a sport where I’m not competing for one of the best players on
the team, it helps put you into your place and puts things into
perspective.”

Calgary Dino Linebacker Duncan Mclean
has been suspended as a result of
positive test for anabolic steroids.
OTTAWA - The Canadian Centre for Ethics
in Sport (CCES) announced today that a
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)
football athlete, Duncan McLean, has
committed an anti-doping rule violation.
The violation occurred during an
out-of-competition doping control
conducted on March 20, 2009.
The anti-doping rule violation is a
result of the athlete's urine sample
returning an adverse analytical finding
for Oxymetholone metabolites, a
prohibited substance according to the
2009 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
Prohibited List. Oxymetholone is a very
toxic anabolic steroid with serious
potential side effects.
In response to the CCES' notification of
the adverse analytical finding, Mr.
McLean waived his right to a hearing and
acknowledged the commission of an
anti-doping rule violation. Mr. McLean
has received a sanction of a two-year
period of ineligibility.
Paul Melia, President and CEO of the
CCES, said "The CCES works closely with
CIS to conduct a comprehensive
anti-doping program and appreciates the
commitment to clean sport shown by CIS,
by officials at Canadian universities,
and by the great majority of
student-athletes."
"Hard work is the best way to achieve
excellence and we can be proud that the
vast majority of CIS student-athletes
are training hard and competing fairly,"
said CIS Chief Executive Officer, Marg
McGregor. "However, some individuals
exercise poor judgement in terms of the
choices they make to meet their goals."
"The University of Calgary is
unequivocally opposed to the use of
banned substances by our
student-athletes," said Kevin Boyles,
Director of Athletics. "We have a
zero-tolerance policy both at the UofC
and in CIS. We are fully supportive of
the Canadian Anti-Doping Program and
hope that this unfortunate situation
sends a strong message throughout the
league."
The CCES is an independent, national,
non-profit organization. Our mission, to
foster ethical sport for all Canadians,
is carried out through research,
promotion, education, detection and
deterrence, as well as through programs
and partnerships with other
organizations.

The National
Student Athlete Advisory Council is totally opposed

25th Annual Western
Canadian All Star Camp
It seems like it was just yesterday that
a fellow by the name of Larry Reda had an idea of holding a
football camp in the summer at Simon Fraser University and now the camp
is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
The camp is now wholly owned by the
football program at SFU but Larry, at 75 years of age, still plays a
huge role as the General Manager.
"I'm so proud of what we have
accomplished over the past 25 years," said Reda. "When I think of how
many kids have come through this camp and gone on to great careers at
university and professional teams all over North America it make my head
swim!"
The camp has grown to such a size that it
has become necessary to split the camp into a Junior Camp (11-14 yrs
of age) and a Senior Camp (15 - 18 yrs of age) over a
two-week period.
"From the perspective of our football
program, the camps are just great." said Dave Johnson, Head Coach
of the SFU Clansmen. "We get to spend two weeks doing what we love to
do.....coach football with a bunch of great kids and other coaches from
outside our staff. It gives us a chance to give something back to
the football community while connecting with players, coaches and
parents and giving them an opportunity to experience the university
environment. Our coaches and players look forward the camps every
year and I can't thank Larry Reda and Lou DesLauriers (SFU
Camp Director/Defensive Coordinator) enough for all their
efforts.....they make my job really easy."
The Camp Staff is led by Camp Head Coach
Tom Kudaba (currently Head Coach at Terry Fox HS and SFU Alumnus)
and features the SFU Coaching Staff augmented by coaches from high
school and community programs.
The Junior Camp runs from July 7 thru'
July 11th and the Senior Camp runs from July 14 thru' 18th.
